DOMINGO É DIA DE MULHER BONITA - MARIA ESTHER, A PRIMEIRA TENISTA BRASILEIRA CAMPEÃ INTERNACIONAL

 A paulista Maria Esther Bueno ganhou da “Manchete Esportiva”  o apreço que mereceu. Depois do seu grande sucesso internacional, em 1959/1960,  em quadras  inglesas de grama, ela voltou a  vencer, em Wimbledon, em 1964, fase  em que a modalidade era amadora e sem ranking classificatório. Mas a Estherzinha ficaria entre as cinco melhores  do mundo do tênis,  entre 1957 e 1967, as suas melhores temporadas.
Durante os seus 10 anos de reinado, Maria Esther venceu 65 torneios internacionais de simples; 90 de duplas; 15 de duplas mistas e foi vice-campeã em outras 45 competições. De suas 257 disputas longe do Brasil, venceu 170. Nos quatro grandes torneios do Grand Slam, ela foi a primeira mulher campeã de duplas em uma mesma temporada: em 1960, levou  a taça de duplas nos Torneios Abertos da Austrália, dos Estados Unidos, Wimbledon, em Londres, e de Roland Garross, na França.
A decadência começou em 1967, devido lesão nos ligamentos do braço direito. Passou por várias cirurgias  que lhe tiraram das quadras. Saiu de cena, definitivamente, em 1977, com este cartel: vence 589 torneios – 20 de Grande Slam –, entre 1957/19678; 8 vezes em Wimbledon, sendo 3 de simples e 5 de duplas; 8 no US Open, com 4 de simples e 4 de duplas; 3 em duplas mistas em Roland Garros e um titulo de duplas no Aberto da Austrália.
